Festival of Lights- Celebrated Overseas on Stamps

2015-11-10 Tue

The atmosphere is jubilant with the Diwali celebrations in the air and crackers everywhere. And what’s more exciting than the Festival being celebrated on International stamps!

To commemorate 20 years of their official Diplomatic relationship in November 2010, India and Israel had released a joint issue of two Diwali and Hanukkah stamps and Sheetlets. Both festivals celebrate the victory of the good over the evil and both being the festivals of lights. The Indian stamps have a row of diyas (earthen lamps) and the Israel stamps have a Hanukkah or a menorah with the words “zion” inscribed within a star.

Canada too celebrates Diwali by issuing special edition of Picture Postage of Diwali stamps. These stamps come in two different designs. One with a pink lotus and the greetings “Happy Diwali” and “Joyeux Diwali” inscribed on it. The other with diyas and “Diwali” written in roman and “Deepavali” in devnagri scripts.

Singapore and Indonesia in South-East Asia and Guyana in mainland South America also have colourful Diwali stamps which capture the beauty of the festival aptly. These stamps depict Lord Rama with his bow and arrow or the Goddess Laxmi, some also have lamps on them.

India too has special post stamps for Diwali.

It is indeed a Happy Diwali to the Philatelists with many countries issuing Diwali special stamps.

A very Happy Diwali to all our friends!

Happy Collecting !
